Blu-ray Review: THE INFORMANT!
Blu-ray rating: 5/10
Two features? THE INFORMANT! Blu-ray only has two special features? Unfortunately, we are going to need at least a little more than two features to really feel satisfied with the Blu-ray release of Steven Soderbergh’s THE INFORMANT!, even though the two features are decent.
THE INFORMANT! Blu-ray is definitely disappointingly light on the extras, but thankfully one of the features is audio commentary by director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns-- an effective way to pack a lot of information about the film and its production into one feature. Soderbergh and Burns do a nice job of offering many informative details while keeping the mood light and playful (Soderbergh mentions his affinity for the ties used in the film several times, and it is cool to hear a director so greatly enjoy such a throwaway but fun aspect to his film); neither Soderbergh nor Burns take themselves too seriously on the commentary.
The only other feature on THE INFORMANT! is deleted scenes, which adds up to a little over six minutes total of extra scenes. Deleted scenes are a natural let down when there are only two features, you would like more than some extra scenes if you are getting such little extra material. However, THE INFORMANT!’s deleted scenes are strong. All of them feel worthy of being in the final film, and contribute to the film’s comic, off-kilter tone. Yes, more inventive and thorough features than deleted scenes are desired, but at least the extra scenes are good.
The two features that you do get with THE INFORMANT! are enjoyable, but you still want more. THE INFORMANT! is based on a true story and naturally you would like some features specifically devoted to this element of the film. Playing up the factual background of the film would no doubt help offer more perspective on THE INFORMANT!. This area is touched on in the commentary, but more in-depth coverage on this aspect would be nice.
The commentary and deleted scenes included on THE INFORMANT! Blu-ray are worth a listen and a look, but they are not enough to keep one from being disappointed that there are not more features to listen to and look at. You just do not get enough with THE INFORMANT! Blu-ray.
THE INFORMANT! is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and download February 23rd.
