Berney leaves Apparation

Coming completely out of nowhere, Deadline is reporting that the head of a major player in the world of film has decided to end his run, leaving numerous projects in limbo.

Bob Berney may not be the most recognizable name, but the projects he has brought to the screen definitely are.  The head and co-founder of the distributor known as Apparition has resigned, just mere days prior to the kick off of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, which was slated to be a massive one for the studio.

The studio, which has brought us films like BRIGHT STAR (which is poorly under seen, and massively underrated), THE RUNAWAYS, and the small thriller, THE SQUARE, but apparently the snag was due to the upcoming Doug Liman film (set to premiere at Cannes) called FAIR GAME.

Apparition was founded by Berney and River Road Productions head Bill Pohlad, with the hopes of picking up and releasing around eight films in a respective year.  However, Pohlad (a producer on FAIR GAME), decided to shop around the film, instead of handing it over to his own distribution arm.  Summit now owns the film, which may very well be the rift that has led to this sudden move.

No bigger question may exist than that revolving around Terrence Malick’s hotly anticipated film, TREE OF LIFE.  The film is still currently at Apparition, but the report says that Berney will be able to take “key staffers with him,” so along with rumors that the Weinstein Brothers are trying to hire the newly available executive, this may just be the beginning of news leaking out of this story.

That all said, as long as we see TREE OF LIFE this year, or for that matter ever, I’m fine with whatever.  That film has been in the works for what seems like millennia now, so hopefully this doesn’t effect the release too much.
