It is rather unfortunate that to most people, the name Bobcat Goldthwait, brings to mind the muppet-sounding character from the POLICE ACADEMY movies.  I've been a fan of Mr. Goldthwait ever since I accidentally watched SLEEPING DOGS LIE on some cable movie channel after I had my tonsils removed.  It wasn't just the painkillers that made me like the film, I was really impressed with the way Goldthwait handled his rather unconventional subject matter.

Hopefully you read my review of WORLD'S GREATEST DAD and rushed out to see the movie in its very limited theatrical run or got it on DVD. Though I knew WORLD'S GREATEST DAD wouldn't be a box office hit (again due to it's subject matter), it did give me hope that there would be a great enough buzz about the films of Goldthwait that it would allow him to continue to make such bold films.

For his next film, Bobcat is surprisingly stepping away from the dark comedy genre.  The project, titled RIO MALO is described as an“asskicking western." The action/adventure story is reported to be about “crooked cops, unavenged murders, injustice, discrimination and drag.”  This isn't entirely new territory for Goldthwait as his film SHAKES THE CLOWN features some of those types of characters described above.

Goldthwait is hoping to begin production sometime this year and will head to Cannes in pursuit of financing. Howard Gertler and Sarah De Sa Rego are attached to produce. Not much else is known about the project at this time, but we wish him all the best and will keep you posted.
