Box Office Round-Up For April 27-29: People stay home as THE AVENGERS looms one week out

The calm before the storm. That’s what this weekend’s box office feels like.

With the top grossing film not even cracking $20 million, and THE AVENGERS looming on the horizon, things seemed a bit lackluster this weekend.  That said, some of the spots here in the box office top ten were rather hotly contested, so let’s dig into it.

Shocking everyone, THINK LIKE A MAN took the number one spot for a second straight week, but something even more shocking was who took the second spot. The stop motion animated feature, THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS barely took control of the second slot, clocking in at $11.4 million, compared to the third place film, THE LUCKY ONE, and its $11.3 million gross.

Fourth went to THE HUNGER GAMES, with the other three big releases, THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT, SAFE and THE RAVEN taking the fifth, sixth and seventh spots. Finally, CHIMPANZEE, THREE STOOGES and CABIN IN THE WOODS round out this week’s top ten.

Now, I had the chance to see SAFE and FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT, neither of which were remotely solid, actually reaffirming my disapproval of both respective genres. SAFE is slightly the better film, saved by an entertaining performance from Jason Statham, but FIVE YEAR is just plain overlong, histrionic and cliché-ridden. Overall, it seems like an odd little week, and with THE AVENGERS coming on strong, with insanely positive reviews, a triple digit weekend gross shouldn’t be out of the realm of probability here.
