Box Office Wrap Up For May 11-13: AVENGERS assemble for one of the biggest second weekends in history
So yes, apparently a billion dollars is damn cool. Just ask Marvel Studios.
As you likely have already heard, director Joss Whedon and his Marvel team-up behemoth THE AVENGERS has annihilated an amalgam of box office records, bringing its worldwide gross, as of the conclusion of this weekend, over the billion dollar mark. That’s right, in only 19 days, the film has already become the 11th highest grossing film of all time. And it’s not slowing down.
Weekend number two brought the film a $103 million gross, bringing its US total to $373.2 million. Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS took the second spot with $28.8 million, $28.8 million too much for a film as aggressively insipid and utterly lifeless as Burton’s piece of work. Third? THINK LIKE A MAN has the honor of sitting in that spot this week, and THE HUNGER GAMES and THE LUCKY ONE clock in at four and five.
Personally, as a huge fan of THE AVENGERS, I couldn’t be happier to see a film not only as good as that Marvel masterwork, but as truly “comic book-y” as it is, do gangbusters. The film is admittedly, top to bottom, nerdy beyond belief and it appears to be hitting some chord with a crowd of film goers ho want some really fantastic escapist humor and action. Count me in for this one and its (hopefully) continued success.
While I am shocked by the film’s success, I’m not shocked that it seems to have such staying power. The film is absolutely fantastic, and the legs it has appear to be strong enough to carry it forward for the foreseeable future.
