Box Office Wrap-Up For May 4-6: AVENGERS assemble atop the weekend breaking records with Hulkian power in the process

Well, that was a bit unexpected. But then again, what should one have expected from a film bringing together four of the biggest heroes in the world today?

That’s right, Marvel’s THE AVENGERS has won this weekend’s box office, and shattered the record for highest grossing weekend in the history of film, raking in an aggressively incomprehensible $200.3 million in just three days. On 4,300 screens, the film nearly made $50k per screen, making more in 20 screens than the number two film, THINK LIKE A MAN, busted out in its full weekend. Simply put, it’s a monster that won’t be stopped for the foreseeable future.

THINK won the second spot with THE HUNGER GAMES, THE LUCKY ONE, THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS and THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT all making roughly $5-6 million. THE RAVEN took home $2.5, with SAFE and CHIMPANZEE both making right around $2.4 million. Finally, THE THREE STOOGES finished 10th, with only $1.8 million. So, to say that Marvel’s monster won out this weekend, is a gross understatement.

Some people took to Twitter proclaiming that a film like THE AVENGERS is a poor film to have at the number one all-time weekend spot, claiming it’s neither great or a deeply affecting film, but I couldn’t disagree more. The film itself is not only brilliantly written and emotionally gripping, giving the emotional heft to characters big and small who have been built over these six films, but it also has something intellectual going on under the surface. I couldn’t be more proud to have this on top of the mountain.
