C. Thomas Howell reportedly cast in SPIDER-MAN reboot; in other news, C. Thomas Howell is still alive
This may be small news to most, but for those who grew up watching THE OUTSIDERS, RED DAWN, or, yes, even SOUL MAN, this day can be viewed as the “start of the comeback.” C. Thomas Howell, a fixture of the eighties in the world of cinema has reportedly been cast to act in Marc Webb’s untitled SPIDER-MAN reboot.
A look at Howell’s IMDb page can be deceiving. You may say, “Hey, He was in H.G. WELLS’ WAR OF THE WORLDS in 2005!” He sure was, but it was not the Spielberg/Tom Cruise film. It was a different one. Then you may say that he was in that remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. Again, it was not the blockbuster Kurt Russell remake, but rather an entirely different, mostly anonymous, version. Hopefully for Howell, this new SPIDER-MAN film will not be viewed as “that other” SPIDER-MAN film that was not as popular as the Sam Raimi trilogy.
The new SPIDER-MAN franchise is off to a good start with a director (Webb) coming off of a big hit, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and the lead, Andrew Garfield, coming off of a potential Oscar winning film, THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Add a couple veterans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field, and a few character actors, Rhys Ifans, Campbell Scott, and Denis Leary, and the prospects of box office success are quite auspicious. Also, Stan Lee will make his obligatory cameo in this film about a character he co-created.
So, call off the dogs, abort the search party, and exhale slowly. C. Thomas Howell is alive and (hopefully) well. Now we can pool our efforts into finding Howell’s OUTSIDERS co-star, Ralph Macchio. We have an excellent start with this hilarious video.
