CANDYLAND gets a pair of writers
All the way back in 2009, it was revealed that yes, a feature film adaptation of the iconic board game “Candyland” was on its way to the big screen. However, two years, and various road bumps later, and thankfully, we are not an inch closer to seeing that very thing happen. At least until this evening.
Variety has revealed that Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger have been hired to writ the film, currently being backed by Universal, who also has BATTLESHIP, OUIJA, MONOPOLY, and STRETCH ARMSTRONG waiting in the wings.
With films like KUNG FU PANDA, MONSTERS VS. ALIENS and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, Aibel is definitely the right type of talent for a project like this, but it’s simply that the project itself isn’t all that appealing. It could ultimately make for quite a solid fantasy film, but frankly, it’s hard to think that that will truly be the case.
Personally, I think it would be far more interesting to start a wholly original fantasy franchise, as it’s a genre I think needs a real increase in output, and with THE HOBBIT on the way, it’s about to be one hell of a popular genre. Kevin Lima is attached to direct the film, so this is at least bound to be quite the family-friendly project.
What do you think?
