Coming out of Cannes, Magnolia Pictures and Madman have just announced they have "pre-bought" the North American and Australia/New Zealand rights to the recently-announced Lars von Trier and Martin Scorsese collaboration, THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS: SCORSESE VS TRIER.

The new project will "follow in the footsteps of THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS, Trier’s landmark 2003 documentary collaboration with Jørgen Leth, wherein von Trier challenged Leth to remake his 1967 short film THE PERFECT HUMAN five times, with an increasingly difficult set of strict rules, or obstructions, that he had to follow." The film is expected to be finished sometime in 2013, and already has my vote for most interesting, unexpected, and bold film of that year.

Magnolia and Madman have already teamed up to distribute von Trier's next, MELANCHOLIA, which debuted at Cannes today.

Von Trier is making other waves at Cannes, after making some questionable remarks at today's MELANCHOLIA press conference (read up on it over at THR, which posted a great article on the kerfuffle).
