Cannes 2011: The Weinstein Company picks up Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s DRAGON (WU XIA)
As we enter into the first days of the Cannes Film Festival, expect these news breaks on distribution deals to come out fast and furious. On the heels of the announcement that The Weinstein Company had already made the first big buy at the festival with THE ARTIST. Now they've picked up something very different - Peter Ho-Sun Chan's "epic" martial arts film, DRAGON (WU XIA). The film is slammed with talent, with a cast that includes such international action stars as Donnie Yen, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Tang Wei. The film will premiere at Cannes on May 14.
TWC has picked up the distribution rights for the world, outside of Asia and French-speaking Europe. They are already planning a 2011 theatrical release. Unsurprisingly, the company has also acquired first option to remake rights for the film. Shock!
The official synopsis of the film is as such: "In the late Qing Dynasty, Liu (Donnie Yen) is a papermaker, leading a simple life with his wife Ayu (Tang Wei) and their two sons. Into their remote village comes Detective Xu (Takeshi Kaneshiro), who is investigating the deaths of two bandits during a robbery. Xu quickly realizes that the incident in question was no ordinary botched robbery – and his dogged inquiry threatens to dredge up the dark secrets of Liu’s buried past, threatening not only Liu and his family, but the entire village."
