Starting off the late night casting news blast, Variety is reporting that the upcoming Jim Carrey-starring adaptation of the beloved Richard and Florence Atwater children’s book, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, just got a little classier.

The outlet is reporting that Angela Lansbury will join Carrey, Carla Gugino, Philip Baker Hall, Ophelia Lovibond, David Krumholtz, Clark Gregg, James Tupper, and Andrew Stewart-Jones in the film’s cast, which will be led by director Mark Waters. Waters, best known for directing MEAN GIRLS, will direct a script penned by Sean Anders and John Morris, writers for this year’s rather uninteresting comedy, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE. I can’t remember the last thing I’ve seen Lansbury in, so it is definitely an interesting addition to an already interesting cast.

Next, Variety is reporting that Eugene Levy will join the cast of the upcoming Evan Goldberg-penned hockey comedy, GOON, set to star Jay Baruchel, Sean William Scott, Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill, and Marc-Andre Grondon.  The film will be directed by Michael Dowse (FUBAR), so there is definitely some talent behind this film. Not too big on this casting choice, though.

Finally, Deadline is reporting that Ridley Scott has finally finished meeting with possible leads for his upcoming ALIEN prequel, and the list is filled with names we’ve already heard - Noomi Rapace (who the director apparently is a fan of), Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish and Natalie Portman. However, the outlet is also reporting that Olivia Wilde, who can next be seen in TRON: LEGACY, is also a possible choice.

Personally, my first and last choice is still Rapace, but honestly, any of these names would be perfect choices. I think the furthest stretch may be Cornish, but even then, I think it works damn well. Mulligan may be a bit too young-looking, but at this point, if any of these names get picked, I’ll but jumping for joy. Still though, Rapace was born to live in Scott’s ALIEN universe, so Fox, make it happen.
