Charles Ferguson helming HBO’s Julian Assange film
Welcome to Friday Night Documentarian Fights.
While director Alex Gibney has recently revealed that he’s already hard at work on a documentary looking at the now-infamous figurehead behind the organization known as Wikileaks, Julian Assange, it looks like he’ll have some steep competition.
THR is reporting that INSIDE JOB and NO END IN SIGHT director Charles Ferguson is set to shine his always intense light on the story of Assange, which will be the director’s first narrative feature. This one joins two fellow feature films, currently being set up at DreamWorks and Universal.
While I do think that Alex Gibney is a great filmmaker, to me, Ferguson is today’s most talented documentary filmmaker. That said, it doesn’t always translate over into the narrative filmmaking, so it will definitely remain to be seen just how good Ferguson is behind a film like this. Overall, it’s really not all that hard to get excited for this thing. The combination of Ferguson and source material makes this one of the most intriguing projects around.
