Charlie Kaufman did script work on KUNG FU PANDA 2

Writing about movies inevitably leads you to talking about screenwriters. They are often an enigmatic group; guys with great ideas who seek to pontificate them through the medium of cinema. Now, here is where the line is drawn. There are two kinds of screenwriters. The ones that succeed at actually conveying what they wish and those that don't. In short, there's Charlie Kaufman and everybody else.

Which is why I was shocked to hear that Kaufman had been tasked with script work on Dreamworks' KUNG FU PANDA sequel. Check out the full story after the jump.

Charlie Kaufman is the pariah that brought the world BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, and SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. Now, I've seen all of these films. You should too. I'd argue that these four films are among the most important of the last decade. I'm one of the select few who think ETERNAL SUNSHINE is far from his best (which is SYNECDOCHE, thanks for asking).

Now, Dreamworks is a studio that's consistently produced animated movies for a good while now. Every year we've got one or two of their pictures in theaters. Everything from MADAGASCAR to SHREK have been Dreamworks' doing. Usually their films are wrought with timely cultural references and at least three poop jokes. Hence, they have yet to measure up to Pixar and their admirable set of classics.

However, they've gotten close. Back in 2008, Dreamworks released KUNG FU PANDA which offered something a bit more mature. Sure, it's got childish humor and sub-par animation but it wasn't bad. In fact, it was quite good. It was clever at times and presented a unique juncture for Dreamworks. They followed that up with this year's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, which suffered from a crappy title but was actually very good.

So, this recent trend could prove that Dreamworks is finally on the road to some decent animated films. Bringing in one of the greatest minds in contemporary screenwriting to work on one of their films is a sign of hope for the sequel. Dreamworks has yet to make a sequel worth watching, and perhaps Charlie Kaufman can make KUNG FU PANDA 2 worth the 90 minute runtime.
