Chris Evans IS Captain America

Looks like Marvel decided to start this week off with quite the bang, and have made up their minds when it comes to the leader of their universe.

Coming off as more of a formality than a surprise, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that Chris Evans has indeed accepted the role of Captain America in the upcoming film, to be directed by Joe Johnston. He was offered the gig this past Friday and, reportedly, papers just need to be signed to formally seal the deal for the new 'Cap.

With names like John Krasinski, Mike Vogel, and Ryan Phillippe all getting mentioned at various times for the role, it reportedly came down to Evans, Channing Tatum, and "Gossip Girl" series regular, Sebastian Stan. The choices were a bit too young for my liking, but of the actors discussed for the role, I think they got out with the best possible choice.
While I think personality-wise Evans fits the role of Cap perfectly, I fall in line with most thinking that Jon Hamm really should have gotten the role.

The film is set to shoot this summer, and Evans will be joining Hugo Weaving as his archenemy, Red Skull, which may be one of the single greatest casting choices in comic book film history. All in all, this is good news that makes me now cautiously optimistic. I have a few problems with Johnston being the director, especially after THE WOLFMAN, but it's a film I'm definitely going to keep an eye on.  A good trailer or some interesting on-set photos will definitely help with the anticipation.
