With all the issues that the American car companies have had in recent years, it is no suprise that the city nicknamed The Motor City is struggling. Detroit is the town that the automobile built and the city needs our help. Perhaps Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP hit the nail on the head when it portrayed Detroit as a city on the verge of collapse due to crime and corruption.

A group called Imagination Station Detroit isn't taking it lying down. Imagination Station is a nonprofit organization  whose interests include public art. In an effort for "greater positivity and more connections coming into Detroit," the organization turned to Kickstarter to fund their idea to erect a Robocop statue in the city. In recent years, Kickstarter has been used by independent filmmakers as a way to raise capital for their film projects. So far more than 1,700 people have donated over $54,000 to make the Robocop statue a reality.

The genesis of the idea came from a suggestion from "a random dude in Massachusetts" according to Detroit mayor Dave Bing on his Twitter account. The random dude suggested that the city "celebrate ROBOCOP the same way Philadelphia does ROCKY," according to the project’s website. The first-term mayor, Dave Bing, replied: “There are not any plans to erect a statue to RoboCop. Thank you for the suggestion.”

About half of the money raised so far was contributed by San Francisco company Omni Consumer Products, which shares its name with the fictional company that tried to turn a dystopian Detroit into Delta City. Omni Consumer Products specializes in turning fictional consumer products from movies and television shows into reality.

The statue would be erected on land owned by the Imagination Station located near the Michigan Central train station.
