Concept art for NEWT, Pixar’s trashed project

Sometimes the most depressing things are the projects that never were. NEWT was supposed to be Pixar's first "grown-up" project. The story followed two newts who...

“...are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other. Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.”

Then, without warning, NEWT was deleted from Pixar's project line-up and my deep depression began. Just as I was beginning to move on with my life, Disney Pixar's Facebook page released a batch of concept art seemingly pulled form the trash. The pictures are truly beautiful and give us a nice look into something we'll likely never see...or will we? Check some of them out after the jump.

These are just a few of the pictures released. Check more out over at Disney Pixar's official Facebook page

As you can probably guess from these photos, NEWT was pretty far into production. They had very specific scene's planned out and characters that would pop up along the journey as well. It baffles me that this specific film has been cut from the line-up. Maybe it's just the optimist in me but it does seem odd that they are releasing concept art for a "dead" film. Is it possible that Pixar is trying to reignite people's interest in the film? I sure hope so!
