Could a “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” film be in the works?
Prostitution, the oldest profession in the world. We've seen many incarnations of hookers on the screen from HUSTLE & FLOW to THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS to PRETTY WOMAN to PRETTY BABY to AMERICAN GIGOLO to MIDNIGHT COWBOY. We've been captivated by the stories of sex for pay because the characters behind the acts lead some of the most fascinating lives doing something that we could never see ourselves doing.
One such tale of the sex trade that has captivated audiences is the exploits of Belle Du Jour in the hit series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. The story of England's most famous sex worker started as a blog, then a newspaper column, then a series of book, then a popular television series now in its fourth season. The next logical step is a feature film. Last year, the real life Belle Du Jour unmasked herself, as she was afraid someone else would beat her to it. The woman spent 14 months working as a call girl with an escort agency to support herself while finishing her doctorate. She is now a health research scientist.
The star of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Billie Piper, confirmed last week that a film version could be in the works. "I’m about to start filming the fourth series and then that will be it,” she told The Sun. “I’m not sure it has legs past four seasons so we’re trying to develop a movie."
I'm sure those involved are hoping it will see the same sort of success as Sex and The City, which also began life as a book before becoming a hit HBO show and two feature films.
Hopefully, a film version could delve deeper into the double-life of the Belle Du Jour character.
