Daniel Craig confirmed as lead of David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
After nearly two months of speculation, Daniel Craig is now officially confirmed to play the male lead, Mikael Blomkvist, in David Fincher’s English language take on THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Craig has been attached to the project since June, and though there were few other names tossed into the ring once Craig’s possible involvement with the adaptation was reported, it’s apparently been a long road to get the actor situated on the project. He is currently filming Jon Favreau’s COWBOYS & ALIENS, and will jump right from that project to DRAGON TATTOO, which is filming this autumn in Sweden. And, despite the myriad issues facing the James Bond franchise, Craig also reportedly had to obtain permission from Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson before going ahead with Fincher’s film.
Craig’s contract also includes options for second and third films in the presumed franchise (hell, the trilogy of books it is based on are only huge international hits, it’s a bit of a no-brainer). Interestingly enough, Craig also has an option for a sequel to COWBOYS & ALIENS. Just how many franchises can this man head up?
Now that Craig is locked, speculation will continue to rage over who will play the female lead in the film, Lisbeth Salander. Many names have been bandied about for the role – including Emily Browning (SUCKER PUNCH), Rooney Mara (who will next appear in Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK), Sara Snook, Sophie Lowe, Lea Seydoux, Ellen Page, and Mia Wasikowska. Fincher is expected to pick “a relative unknown” for the role, and I continue to find Mara to be the most interesting choice from the list.
The film has been adapted by SCHINDLER’S LIST scribe Steve Zaillian and is already slated for a December 21, 2011 release date.
