Daniel Craig to star in David Fincher’s GIRL WITH DRAGON TATTOO?
Deadline is reporting that Daniel Craig is in talks to star as the lead (the Mikael Blomkvist character...not the girl with the tat) in David Fincher's Americanized remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. The report also mentions that frequent Fincher collaborator Brad Pitt has had his name previously thrown into the hat, which I wouldn't mind either.
The Danish film from Niels Arden Oplev, based upon the novel by the same name from the late Stieg Larsson, follows a defunct journalist as he is hired by a wealthy man to uncover the mystery behind disappearance of his niece some 40 years ago. What he uncovers, with the help of a young female hacker, is more than he ever bargained for. The novel, and subsequent film, are the first in Larsson's three part Millennium trilogy.
I loved Oplev's take on the book but I gladly welcome the US remake, as I think that the film could have used a little bit of cutting and shaping here and there. Luckily, the perfect director is behind it, as I can think of no one better to helm the dark noirish detective tale than Fincher. With a script from Steve Zaillian (SCHINDLER'S LIST) and Carey Mulligan set to star as the titular girl that has a tattoo of a dragon, this could be one remake that actually surpasses its foreign predecessor. Now, if they could just needle down Craig!
