There has been no shortage of conjecture for which villain(s) will be the thorn in Batman's side for Christopher Nolan's final Batman installment, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. The Joker and Harvey Dent have been tucked away as villains of the past, leaving fans to throw out ideas such as The Riddler (which has been ruled out) and Killer Croc for the new foil. However, the new trailer for the video game Arkham City has added gasoline to the fire, by featuring classic Batman villain, Hugo Strange.

Hugo Strange is a sociopathic psychiatrist who wishes to defeat Batman in order to become the Caped Crusader himself. Adding to the speculation is the fact that Tom Hardy signed on to Nolan's project without specifying the role he would play. He has been no stranger to playing a bald psychotic criminal, as evidenced by his turn as the insane eponymously titled character in the 2009 film, BRONSON. Arkham Asylum, the predecessor to Arkham City, featured The Joker as its villain, the same as in THE DARK KNIGHT, giving credence to the idea that the video game could be a reliable prognosticator. Check out the trailer for Arkham City after the break, along with more of my thoughts on it.

I believe that Hardy and Strange would be a likely and suitable combination. Fans will continue to champion the cases for their age old favorites such as The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Holiday Killer, none of whom have been ruled out, but should know that any villain Nolan has touched has turned to gold. The Joker and Harvey Dent have been portrayed many times in many different ways, but Nolan has made Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart's portrayals the most enduring. Nolan has proven that he is too creative and in command of his craft to fall back on a rehash of Hardy's Bronson character or any other cliché' of the mad scientist.
