Darren Aronofsky in talks to helm WOLVERINE 2?

Well, I will be damned.

Amongst the list of possible directing choices for Darren Aronofsky, a filmmaker looking to jump into the world of franchise films, were projects like SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL, PREACHER, and WOLVERINE 2.

Now, out of those three, the least likely seemed to be the latter. PREACHER would be a perfect fit for the filmmaker, and now, knowing that Zack Snyder has taken the reins of SUPERMAN, that’s obviously off the board.

Well, according to Deadline, it appears as though Aronofsky, set to see his latest film BLACK SWAN hit theaters later this year, is closer to directing the upcoming WOLVERINE sequel, which may be one of the most shocking stories to come across this writer’s desk. Apparently the filmmaker and the studio behind the film, Fox, have started talks that would land Aronofsky in the director’s chair of this rather maligned sequel.

Personally, while I’ll see anything this man does, as he’s made some of my all-time favorite films such as PI and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, but this just doesn’t seem like a good fit. If this does come to fruition, I’ll be massively excited, but it is hard to believe that Aronofsky would choose this project to direct.

I doubt we’ll see the Dardenne Brothers-style Aronofsky that we’ve seen since THE WRESTLER, but who knows. This could be the introspective WOLVERINE film we’ve all been waiting for. If there has ever been a time to do it, it’s now. Having just seen an episode of the X-Men Animated Series, where Wolverine goes back to Japan, there is room for this narrative to be done well, and if there is a name to do this style of film, Aronofsky is as good as any other one you could toss in.
