Darren Aronofsky opens up about THE WOLVERINE

There seems to be a divide of two camps when it comes to director Darren Aronofky’s choice to go from award contenders and winners to a big budget action franchise like THE WOLVERINE. Some feel that it’s an obvious favor to friend and star Hugh Jackman, who helped the director in the ninth ending when Brad Pitt left THE FOUNTAIN and funding on the film fell apart. After all, why would the director of films like THE WRESTLER, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and PI chose to do a comic book adaptation after coming off BLACK SWAN, a film many say is a sure thing when it comes to this year’s Oscars versus something out of his personal portfolio?

While the other camp thinks they have an answer to that…why the hell not? It’s like going to recess after writing the best essay of your life. Imagine for a second what a visionary like Aronofsky could bring to a film like WOLVERINE. It’s the Nolan/BATMAN model, which has proven to work far better than any other big screen comic book adaptation to date. In short, it’s the type of situation that the phrase “epic” was invented for.

Well, based on a few statements Aronofsky made about taking on Logan’s legend, he appears to agree with the latter.

“I think I’m being hired because of who I am; I’m not being hired to turn into someone. I’m being hired to do what I do. I don’t know exactly if [Fox head Tom Rothman] knows what he’s bought, but we’re going to make something great.”

That’s a hired gun that I’m ready to see fire off for sure! Aronofsky went on to express his personal reasonings behind the choice.

“I’m just trying to have fun, and for the first time in my life…Every single film I’ve done so far, I’ve been the only person in the room who wants to make the movie,” he told David Poland of Movie City News. “And I kind of am excited about doing a film where actually everyone wants to make it — just to see what the experience is like and see if I can do what I do in that world. It’s not like I’m going to change my process. I’m going to be working with the same team and making…really trying to do something very, very different.”

After the aforementioned problems he had on THE FOUNTAIN, not to mention almost being the guy to bring us what were sure-to-be insane takes on BATMAN and ROBOCOP, this makes complete and perfect sense. I know which camp I belong to. And I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’re clawing at the keyboard until the day we get to see Darren Aronofky’s THE WOLVERINE.

Check out the full interview with Aronofsky below, in which he also states that his WOLVERINE will have no connection to any previous iterations.
