You really can’t go wrong when David Fincher is attached to a film.
That is why, if The Hollywood Reporter is to be believed, Disney’s upcoming take on the Jules Verne story, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, just became one film that I’m anxiously anticipating.
The outlet is reporting that, after approaching Disney executives with the hopes of helming one of the studio’s upcoming tentpole projects, he is now in talks to helm their formerly McG-led adaptation of the famous story. The film is set to be penned by Scott Burnes, writer of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and THE INFORMANT, and is drawing comparisons to THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, in the tone and style of film Fincher is looking to craft.
This is a distinctly different step in the career of Fincher, who has made his name in starkly dark films like SE7EN and THE GAME. However, this will be his first real tentpole franchise directing gig since ALIEN 3, and he has become quite a different filmmaker. Personally, I can’t wait to see this film, but we may very well have to wait a bit, as Fincher has one hell of a packed slate.
He currently has THE SOCIAL NETWORK nearly complete, and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO still set to go into production. However, with the house of mouse being the force behind this film, we may be getting this sooner rather than later. I sure as hell hope so at least.
