Video games or comic books? Which of these has a better track record for feature length films? Exactly. So perhaps it makes sense that David O. Russell is considering putting his adaptation of the video game UNCHARTED on the back burner in order to rewrite and direct the comic book adaptation of 2 GUNS.

Universal Pictures picked up the rights to the graphic novel in August of 2008. Vince Vaughn is attached to star in the story of a DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer who are unwittingly investigating each other and who steal mob money for the good guys. They later realize that the mob actually got them to steal $50 million from the CIA. Owen Wilson has been rumored to be involved as well.

When you’re hot, you’re hot. Russell’s star has been shining since the glowing reviews started rolling in for THE FIGHTER, the Mickey Ward biopic that he directed. However, Russell has directed movies less frequently than a Presidential election takes place. He directed THREE KINGS in 1999, followed by I HEART HUCKABEES in 2004, and then waited six years to direct THE FIGHTER.

News about UNCHARTED, which would reunite Russell and Mark Wahlberg, who worked together on THE FIGHTER, has ebbed and flowed for a while. There had also been rumors that Russell was looking into doing the drama OLD ST. LOUIS as well. In other words, Russell can be defined as being very fickle, unless of course he is cursing out Lily Tomlin (NSFW! A lot of swearing in that clip!).

How many good video game movies have there been? Seriously. We have sat through MORTAL KOMBAT, MAX PAINE, STREET FIGHTER, SUPER MARIO BROS., DOUBLE DRAGON, DOOM, AEON FLUX, HITMAN, etc. For the love of God, make it stop. Meanwhile, comic book movies have included the BATMAN, SPIDER-MAN, and SUPERMAN franchises, along with WATCHMEN, MEN IN BLACK, THE CROW, HELLBOY, KICK-ASS, IRON MAN, GHOST WORLD, ROAD TO PERDITION, and, of course, THE ROCKETEER. Russell is not oblivious to film history and that is why I give so much credence to this report.
