Looks like the NEW MOON soundtrack is very much coming together. Today, the first single off the soundtrack was announced - and it's by Death Cab for Cutie. While most of the soundtrack buzz has centered more on Thom Yorke's contribution to the album, it appears Ben Gibbard and company have been flying under the radar on this one. The song is titled "Meet Me On the Equinox," and the band is set to debut it at the MTV VMAs on September 13.

Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer said in a statement, "We wrote 'Meet Me On the Equinox' to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the TWILIGHT series, and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters." Celestial themes. In a film called NEW MOON. Good eye!

There has also been a lot of buzz on some other artists who contributed songs to the soundtrack. So far, the confirmed list includes Yorke and Bon Iver. Other rumored artists and groups include The Used, Muse, Band of Skulls, and even some chatter about Coldplay.

The NEW MOON soundtrack and score will, however, not include some of the biggest draws from TWILIGHT's soundtrack. Paramore's song "Decode" was sort of the unofficial theme song from TWILIGHT, but they have turned down contributing to NEW MOON's soundtrack. And, oddly enough, Carter Burwell is not returning as composer, but instead Alexandre Desplat is creating the score. While Desplat certainly has a great resume - including the upcoming FANTASTIC MR. FOX and TREE OF LIFE, Burwell's score formed a huge part of TWILIGHT. He penned the instrumental "Bella's Lullaby," bringing Edward Cullen's music to the ears and hearts of Twi-hards everywhere.

The soundtrack will be released October 20.

How does all of this sound to your ears? Did you like the TWILIGHT soundtrack? Do you think NEW MOON's will be better?

And PS – sad about no Carter Burwell on this one as I LOVE him as composer and his work on Twilight. But I dig Alexandre Desplat too – we will see! :)
