Depp might be Pancho Villa
Johnny Depp recently played infamous 1930s criminal John Dillinger in PUBLIC ENEMIES, and apparently he is close to signing up to play another well-known historical figure. Variety is reporting that Depp is currently in advance negotiations to star as Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa in SEVEN FRIENDS OF PANCHO VILLA AND THE WOMAN WITH SIX FINGERS. Salma Hayek is also in talks to co-star.
According to the article, "The script is based on the biographical novel 'The Friends of Pancho Villa,' in which author James Carlos Blake recounts how Villa and his compadres had a great time fighting and robbing the rich, but also dancing, partying and making love." Sounds like the basis for a very entertaining film.
SEVEN FRIENDS is going to be a Spanish language film (yup, Depp will be speaking Spanish in it), and will do some filming in Mexico. However, due to Depp's schedule, the project won't start shooting until 2011.
I would definitely be interested in seeing Johnny Depp as Pancho Villa. The man has plenty of charisma (and talent), which should be put to great use with this role. Let's hope Johnny makes it official soon!
