DESPICABLE ME 2 already in the works; short films starring “minions” likely
As far as movies go, the summer season has been pretty disappointing. The past 8-10 weeks have been full of critical failures and box office mediocrity. It's not the worst summer in memory, but it's sub-par relative to the last few years.
One of the few surprises we've had came from a very unlikely camp - Universal's budding animation department. Their foray into the world of family films came with DESPICABLE ME, and audiences responded favorably. As you might expect, Universal is already planning a sequel to their long overdue hit. The full story follows after the break.
By about now you're probably sick of the sequel/reboot fever that's hit Hollywood. However, a film like this could possibly break the mold. Fueled by their recent success, Universal and Illumination Entertainment has a chance to offer up some sizable competition for Pixar.
What I found most intriguing about this news was that in addition to a sequel, Universal will be developing several short films starring the minions of DESPICABLE ME. You know, the adorable Twinkie-esque creatures you've seen in all the trailers? A large portion of the marketing focused on these little guys, as audiences were laughing at their intrinsic silliness.
Also of interest is Universal/Illumination's slate of upcoming projects. THE LORAX, WHERE'S WALDO, and HOP could very well bring the studio some recognition or, at the very least, a sizable bankroll.
