With the start of production just a week in, the fourth film in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series, ON STRANGER TIDES, has finally had a brief plot summary released for it, and I must say, it sounds like garbage.

According to /Film, Disney has released a press release commemorating the beginning of production on the film which sees Johnny Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, and will introduce Penelope Cruz as a “woman from his past” and Ian McShane as the dangerous and legendary Blackbeard.

"In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love–or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past."

While I’m not the biggest fan of the series, I do really enjoy the first film.  However, as the films have been released, we have received diminishing returns for sure. The second film failed on many levels, with the third being a bloated and nearly unwatchable piece of cinematic dreck.  That said, the cast has gotten a distinct upgrade with both Cruz and McShane, and with Rob Marshall at the helm, it’s going to be one visually impressive film.

All in all though, I find it quite difficult to really get excited for this project. Maybe I’ll be wrong, but I don’t have the highest of hopes for this.
