Disney to release BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LION KING in 3D…on Blu-ray
Well, it’s about damn time.
For those anxiously awaiting the release of the long talked about 3D conversion of Disney’s modern classic, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, not all may be lost. The film, which has been in talks for quite some time, even getting a Valentine’s Day 2010 release date, has been delayed repeatedly, until recently receiving a TBA 2011 spot on Disney’s slate.
Well, according to Disney itself (with a hat tip to /Film), the film, along with an equally discussed 3D conversion of THE LION KING, will indeed see the light of day come this year. However, it’s not in the way you’d like.
The studio will be releasing both films, in 3D, on Blu-ray this year, with neither receiving a theatrical release.
Personally, I find this ultimately quite silly. Both films would be massively popular theatrical draws, and it is a remarkably awkward move by a studio like this. I don’t know a single person with a 3D TV, and I don’t see that changing comes these films’ fall 2011 Blu-ray release. Now, I do plan on buying a Blu-ray of LION KING, simply because I think it’ll look bloody gorgeous. However, there isn’t an amount possible that I wouldn’t pay to have seen either of these on the big screen, especially their animal-filled classic.
