DVD news: THE EXPERIMENT goes straight to DVD; Herzog’s MY SON, MY SON to hit in September

I hate it when this happens.

According to MovieWeb, the previously-unreleased remake of the Oliver Hirschbiegel film, DAS EXPERIMENT, called THE EXPERIMENT, is slated to go straight to DVD, and will hit shelves on September 21. Now, while that in and of itself doesn’t sound to upsetting, the cast makes this really sad news.

The film is directed by Paul Scheuring, best known as a producer and writer for the television series Prison Break, and stars Adrien Brody, Forrest Whitaker, and Elijah Wood. It just got a poster a couple of weeks ago, and while this news doesn’t bode well for the quality of the film itself, honestly, this is still a project I’m really interested in. The premise sounds interesting, as it follows a group of men who play prisoners and guards for research, only to see the story go really dark, and with a cast like that, you really can’t miss. This is definitely a bit of a sad story, but hey, at least we will get to see the damn thing.

In other DVD news, in a year that saw Werner Herzog release his remake/reboot/take on BAD LIEUTENANT, the second film he made in 2009, MY SON, MY SON, WHAT HAVE YE DONE (produced by David Lynch no less), will see a much needed release on DVD, on September 14. The film stars Michael Shannon, and saw not only a very limited release, but one that saw no one come out to see it. The film went very much underseen, and this will hopefully change that, as buzz behind it has been very good.

Oh, and the DVD release will also include Rahman Bahrani’s brilliant short, PLASTIC BAG, which is narrated by Herzog, and is absolutely amazing, so if only for that, pick this one up.
