BURN AFTER READING was one of my favorite movies this year made by favorite Director/Producer combination of the ingenious Coen Brothers. BURN AFTER READING is the first film they have made since the monumental success of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and you can tell they didn’t put as much money into the film; it is very basic in its structure. As Joel Coen says on one featurette the film is “sort of about the Central Intelligence Agency and physical fitness,” well said Joel. The DVD we received is just a plain regular edition DVD with one disc inside and nothing else. There are a meager three special features on this DVD and it even seems they made a special effort just to have these. The first features mostly Joel and Ethan Coen explaining a quick premise of the movie and if you have never watched an interview with these two men you will soon understand their dry sense of humor that spills over into their movies. This feature comes to an end in approximately 5 minutes and I assumed it was just a warm up for a longer 20 or maybe 25 minute feature that would go into great detail about the movie. Wrong. The next feature was 12 min long and was titled DC INSIDERS RUN AMUCK ; obviously a witty poke at a potential newspaper headline. The basic premise of the second feature was to go over each main character and from their idiosyncrasies to the wardrobe their wear in they use in the movie to portray those quirks. I was mildly entertained by this feature thought still felt let down. The last feature is called “Welcome Back George” and is a worthless 2 minute repartee on how great it is that the Coen Brothers picked George Clooney for this part; despite the fact that they wrote the script specifically for him. Nonetheless, these three features are three edited slices of the same interviews and I honest-to-God would have been more satisfied if they had just put them all together as one. BURN AFTER READING was a great movie and if you enjoyed it in theaters or are a fan of the Coens then you should surely by the DVD but if you want more insight into the filmmaking and acting, I might wait for a BURN AFTER READING x-DISC SPECIAL EDITION to come out.
