Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joins JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2

After joining action films like FAST FIVE and FASTER, one could only think that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was ready to leave the world of family friendly kid features, which with the likes of THE TOOTH FAIRY and PLANET 51, became his home.

Well, apparently that’s not completely true.

According to THR, the actor is currently in talks to lead the upcoming film, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2, replacing Brendan Fraser.  Apparently, Fraser had to drop due to “scheduling conflicts,” but with the first film’s director, Eric Brevig, being forced out by New Line, who wants this film out by 2011, it looks like Fraser decided not to return.  In Brevig’s place will be CATS AND DOGS: REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE helmer Brad Payton, so that should pretty much tell you what to expect.

Worried about how this will play into universe continuity? First off, stop reading this because that’s just ridiculous, and second, Johnson will play the boyfriend to the mother of Josh Hutcherson’s character, with the two teaming up to save his grandfather from a mysterious island.  Yeah, sounds awesome.

Expect the film to hit sometime next year, with production starting in October.  I know so many of you care.

About Joshua Brunsting

Born in the tiny Michigan city known as Holland, and raised in the even smaller city known as Saugatuck, I have been a film geek for the majority of my life, and have known film was my passion ever since the final frame of THE LION KING. I’m a romantic with a thing for 60’s pop music (preferably French), John Keats poems, and an even bigger thing for film noir. Currently a Journalism Major at Grand Valley State University, I am using my love of film, and my deathly, ninja-like, skill behind the keyboard to slowly take over the world. When I’m not writing about or watching film, I’m listening to music, particularly from the likes of TV on the Radio, Best Coast, and Semi Precious Weapons. I play the ukulele, and I also have a deep and intense love for Gustavo Santaolalla and Ennio Morricone, but then again, who doesn’t. I was drum major for my high school marching band for two years, I’m one of the four people who actually watched Dollhouse, and my favorite film of all time is Godard’s BREATHLESS. I’m a wannabe screenwriter, a wild thing, a nerd, a geek, and most importantly, I’m a lover of film. Oh, and I want to be Captain Planet when I grow up.
