Wait. If you listen very carefully, you can hear the dreams of billions of nerds coming true.
That's right, Gordon and the Whalers, our first real piece of proof of existence for the WORLD OF WARCRAFT movie is here. It has arrived in the form of some beautiful early concept art for the great and mighty Night Elf tree (can you tell I'm a fan?) Teldrassil. Check it out after the break!
This comes from WoW guide site (and my personal favorite, at that) Wowwiki.com. For those of you who don't play the game, first of all, you should. Climb down from your "WoW is for nerds" high-horse and join the scourge. It's inevitable. Secondly, one of the many great things about it is how rife with great storytelling it is. What you're seeing above is the home of the Night Elves. To compare one great nerd story to another, Teldrassil is to Night elves as Rivendell is to the High Elves of Lord of the Rings.
After the invasion of the Burning Legion invades Kalimdor, the Night Elves have their immortality threatened as the trees their souls are linked to have been burned to the ground. After eventually defeating the Burning Legion with the help of Malfurian Stormrange and Tyranda Whisperwind (The WoW equivalent of Elrond and Arwen) a few "wayward druids" (via World of Warcraft) propose to plant a magical tree that would once again reconnect their spirits to the eternal world.
Now the Night Elves live here, in the capitol city of Darnassus. This is a story I'm predicting we won't see, or maybe only in a quick flash back, so enjoy the background while you can.
In case you haven't been picking up on it, I'm a wee bit excited for the movie. As of now, all we know is that Sam Raimi is attached in every way he can be and that the project could hit sometime in late 2011. That seems a little soon to me, so I'm predicting a push back, but one can only hope I'm wrong.
