Emma Watson joins Sofia Coppola’s BLING RING

Say what you will about her or her films, but director Sophia Coppola routinely proves to be one of the most interesting voices within the film world.

Be it the mesmerizing VIRGIN SUICIDES or her true masterpiece, the moving MARIE ANTOINETTE (obviously LOST IN TRANSLATION is brilliant, as well), the filmmaker has made a name for herself, iconic last name or not.  And now she has a new project.

Variety reports that Emma Watson has been cast in the lead role of Coppola’s upcoming film, BLING RING.

Telling the story of “a group of teenagers who commit a string of celebrity burglaries,” the film sounds like an odd little departure for Coppola, a project that sounds far more comedic than anything Coppola’s done up to this point.

Personally, while I did find faults in her last work, SOMEWHERE, Coppola is one of my favorite filmmakers, and Watson is proving to be one of the most interesting young actresses in some time.  Hopefully this, and other projects, will allow this talented and beyond beautiful actress to break free from her HARRY POTTER past.

What do you think?
