With Derek Cianfrance making huge waves following the release of his sophomore narrative effort (after a film entitled BROTHER TIED and a series of documentaries) BLUE VALENTINE, the director has become something of a big deal.

And now, he’s forming one hell of a cast for his follow-up, a film entitled THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES.

Already starring both Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, Deadlineis reporting that both Eva Mendes and the always-wonderful Greta Gerwig are currently in talks to star alongside the hunky duo of Gosling and Cooper. The film will follow “the tragic consequences of a showdown between a motorcycle rider-turned-bank robber (Gosling) and a cop-turned politician (Cooper).” Mendes is set to play the robber’s main squeeze, with Gerwig opposite her as the politician’s wife.

It goes without saying that, following BLUE VALENTINE, Cianfrance is one of today’s most interesting talents. While the premise here doesn’t sound insanely interesting, the cast sure as hell does, particularly Gosling who, after seeing something like DRIVE at Cannes this year, proves that he’s one hell of a dramatic actor, able to take on just about any damn role. Toss in an always-watchable Gerwig, and you have a film that can’t get here fast enough.
