F. Gary Gray to helm NWA biopic; CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 gig now down to two contenders
There can be only one.
Okay. Roughly a week or so ago, it was revealed that the team over at Marvel had gotten down to three names for their pending sequel to CAPTAIN AMERICA, now set to bow on April 4, 2014. Included in this crew was F. Gary Gray, George Nolfi and Joe and Anthony Russo, but now one of them have gone on to vastly different pastures.
Deadline is reporting that Gray will now be helming his long-gestating NWA biopic, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, taking him out of the running for the Marvel gig. The film is being co-produced by Ice Cube, and has been in the works for going on three years now.
So where does that leave Cap? Well, with the film still a couple of years off, this list may ultimately change, but knowing Marvel, it will be a name we haven’t even thought of yet, if it’s not already on this list. I’d love to see Nolfi get the shot, but The Russos would be one hell of an odd choice. However, can we talk about how great this NWA biopic sounds? Gray is the perfect choice, and this is seemingly a passion project for those involved, so hopefully it can live up to the potential here.
