Listen - the Coen brothers could remake DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER'S DEAD, and the flick would be Oscar bait before pre-production even started. In fact, I'd like to see that. But that's neither here nor there. Today we get our first look at the Coens' next project that is a) actually in production and b) most likely bound for glory. The brothers Coen are hard at work on their remake of TRUE GRIT, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld (whom the Coens now-famously found in an open casting call).

Today, we get our first look at Bridges and Steinfeld in character as Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross on the set of the remake of the John Wayne classic (which will apparently stick closer to the source material, Charles Portis' novel of the same name). Fans of the original will be pleased to see Rooster's famous eye patch well-represented here. Check out four other on-set pictures after the break!

Fans of the original, does Steinfeld look like a suitable Mattie Ross? Is Bridges your idea of a new take on Rooster Cogburn?

The film is set for release on December 25.

Totally seeing this wearing an eye patch.

I loved the original “True Grit” and I have seen it several times. Bridges looks like a good Cogburn. However, I think Mattie Ross is supposed to look a little less “pretty.” She was a bit rougher with the short hair and tough attitude. But, Miss Steinfeld could play it well…I don't know. I just think that making her hair all nice and in pigtails makes her look more “cute” rather than tough.
As far as looking like the original, Bridges gets an 8 or 9 (No one can top John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn) and Steinfeld gets a 6.

Agree Hailee Steinfeld is too pretty, but if she can act she can overcome that. The pigtails are no problem–Mattie's a traditional girl with grit, not a tomboy. Kim Darby makes the 1969 picture unwatchable for me. Mattie should be plain and sour but a pistol, not the snub-nosed, sulky non-entity portrayed by 22-year-old Kim Darby. Not happy with Bridges's beard–he should have a walrus mustache–and he doesn't look fat enough in these pictures, but he'll do a great job. I'm agog with anticipation!

I think they look fine; Bridges surprisingly so. You'd think they would release some official pictures!

Also agree with #1. Every single time First Blood is on TV I watch it (which has been happening a lot on AMC). Just a damn good movie. Really original protagonist and some really good antagonists too.
