While many people may be focusing on the upcoming third film in the BATMAN film franchise that he and director Chris Nolan are set to work on, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, actor Christian Bale is currently working hard on a project that is wholly different.

Entitled THE 13 WOMEN OF NANJING, he’s currently shooting in China under the eye of director Zhang Yimou, and thanks to Tianjinwe (via /Film), we now have our first look at what appears to be one hell of a film.

The film looks at the infamous 1937 incident, known as the Nanjing Massacre, where a group of Japanese soldiers slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and soldiers, raped thousands of women, and ultimately took control of the city of Nanjing. Bale will be playing a priest in this film, one that looks to be unlike much of what Bale has been doing as of late.

Personally, I really love the look of these photos, and Bale, being a genuinely solid thespian, will definitely be tested within a film like this. Yimou is one hell of a filmmaker, so this will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting projects coming down the pipe, particularly that Bale has found himself involved in.
