It looks like we are in for something special from director and visual madman Baz Luhrmann.

Christmas Day will see the release of the Leonardo DiCaprio-led adaptation of the iconic F. Scott Fitzgerald story The Great Gatsby, and thanks to Apple, we have the first trailer for this hotly anticipated film. And hot doesn’t even begin to describe just how great a film this looks to be. Check it out after the jump.

Featuring A-listers Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan and Luhrmann’s patented hyperkinetic aesthetic, the film seems to mark a return to form for the director. I had a middling response to his last film, AUSTRALIA, but also know that with films like STRICTLY BALLROOM and ROMEO + JULIET to his credit, he’s very much a filmmaker unlike any other. The time period for THE GREAT GATSBY suits his sense of style and from the trailer the film looks to be beautiful, moving, and damn good.
