Francis Lawrence gets the CATCHING FIRE gig?

With the film’s release just around 18 months away, we finally appear to have the name of just who will be directing the upcoming sequel to THE HUNGER GAMES, CATCHING FIRE. And it’s not one that you’d expect.

THR is reporting that Lionsgate has offered Francis Lawrence the gig to direct the project, with names like Bennett Miller, Cary Fukunaga, Tomas Alfredson (!) and Duncan Jones (!!) all rumored to be on the studio’s shortlist.

Personally, while I find Lawrence’s films to be rather uninteresting (save for moments of the otherwise dull CONSTANTINE), this is an interesting choice.  They again don’t go with a true-blue action director, but someone with a bit more experience with the blending of action and true drama, making this writer think that they have aspirations for the picture. I’d like to have seen someone, of the names listed here at least, like Fukunaga or Alfredson get their chance to really show their chops here with a huge project like this, but instead we get the Wonder Bread of directing choices.  Neither attention grabbing, nor expectation killing.

What do you think?
