Funny Games
What can I say about Funny Games? I'm not even sure where to start because I have mixed feelings about the movie. Did I laugh? Yes, a lot. Did I get annoyed a few times at the slow, lingering scenes? Yes, very. Did I wear my Cowboys jersey and walk out of the film halfway through? No, I left that up to the group of dude bros who sat behind me.
When it comes down to it, I have caught myself the last few days recommending the movie to friends as we sat thinking of what to go see at the theater. So, I guess that means something.
In the movie, a family drives to their summer house on the lake. When they arrive, two very well mannered gentlemen show up and request to borrow some eggs. Their behavior is extremely awkward and the family asks them to leave... several times. Unfortunately for the family, they don't leave and instead decide to make a bet. Their bet is simple: will the family live through the night or not?
For those who didn't know, this is a remake of an older film, which I haven't seen. However, our very own Mr. Rusty Gordon assures me the remake is almost identical to the original, with the exception of a few additional scenes.
The movie stars Naomi Watts as the mother (Ann), Tim Roth as the father (George) and some awkward little boy (possibly a girl with a short hair cut) as their little boy. The two villains are played by Michael Pitt (Paul) and Brady Corbet (Peter). Both Watts and Roth do a great job of portraying a couple who are being tortured physically and mentally and some of the long camera shots are perfect for showing their ability to stay in character for a long time.
Both Pitt and Corbet did an excellent job of being extremely weird, awkward, morally off and really funny. I love their ability to torture a family while making a sandwich and teasing each other about loosing weight.
The movie isn't necessarily slow, but some of the extended scenes give it a lengthy pace. If you are looking for blood and guts, this isn't the movie for you. But don't get me wrong, there are some graphic scenes and shots, but most everything is shown after the fact and there isn't any "in your face" type violence.
Go see this movie. Don't leave in the middle of it and don't expect the everyday slasher movie. Just laugh. It's funny, I promise.
