Gareth Edwards to helm GODZILLA
Around these parts, you may have heard us buzzing about Gareth Edwards' MONSTERS, a festival favorite from last year that landed in a number of our Top 10 lists (including mine). The film itself was a gem, but its writer and director, Gareth Edwards, only added to the film's stature in our eyes. A genuinely nice, passionate guy, Edwards is also a filmmaker who gets things done (look no further than the impressive effects and wonderful acting he got out of a shoestring budget for MONSTERS). It was only a matter of time before Edwards hit the mainstream. A few months back, Edwards' involvement with Timur Bekmambetov on another sci-fi project was announced, but today - well, things have gotten much bigger for the Brit. Really big. Godzilla big.
Edwards has been tapped to helm the GODZILLA reboot. Commence cheering.
The reboot is coming to us from Legendary Pictures, who will co-produce and co-finance with Warner Bros., who will also distribute the film. Apparently, the team at Legendary "sought [Edwards] out, thinking he could be the right man to take their monster into the 21st century." I am going to go ahead and say, I think they're damn right.
The script for the film, as written by David Callaham, already exists, but Legendary is said to be teaming Edwards up with "a new yet-to-hired writer" to finish the work. Way back in September, we learned that Godzilla would be fighting other monsters in the new film, though no word on if that is still true.
