Gary Ross holding out on CATCHING FIRE?
Despite making a literal boatload of cash, it appears as though director Gary Ross may be jumping ship for the inevitable HUNGER GAMES sequel.
THR is reporting that Ross is wanting a “significant raise” to helm the sequel, CATCHING FIRE, throwing quite a wrench into Lionsgate’s plans to get this sequel up and running prior to star Jennifer Lawrence leaving to go shoot the much talked about sequel to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.
Fox has an option on Lawrence for that film, so her schedule is about as free right now as it is every going to be, making this far from something Lionsgate really wants. If this gets held up too long, the studio may be forced to choose someone else to take on the film.
Personally, I’d love to see that happen. I didn’t mind Ross’ direction of the film, but his camera always felt like it was leaving the audience out of something far more visceral and far more affecting. The film itself was relatively scatterbrained and with his dreadfully dull conclusion, the film could use a fresh face to take on the universe.
