George Clooney may head to Farragut North with Chris Pine, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti
George Clooney's directorial efforts have been far from disappointing. He's got GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK and CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND under his belt to name a few. He's been eyeing the play Farragut North as a possible feature film directorial project for over three years now.
The stage play has starred the likes of starred John Gallagher, Jr., Chris Noth, Olivia Thirlby, Kate Blumberg and Isaiah Whitlock, Jr. Clooney is hoping to round up an even more impressive cast. So far his sights are set on Chris Pine, Philip Semour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti.
According to Wikipedia, Farragut North is billed as "a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape — about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it." Written by Beau Willimon who worked on Howard Dean's campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination, the story is set in Des Moines, Iowa and follows the campaign from the Iowa caucuses through the eyes of campaign mastermind Stephen Myers who will stop at nothing to get his candidate the nomination.
Chris Pine of STAR TREK fame is in the running for the role of Myers, a role that once had Leonardo Dicaprio attached. This is a familiar part for Pine, as he had the role in the L.A. stage production of the play last year. Philip Seymour Hoffman is attached to play Paul Zara, Mer's boss on the campaign trail. This role was originally intended for Brad Pitt, but it appears his schedule is too busy for it. Paul Giamatti is being courted for the role of campaign manager for the rival candidate. Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei are also on Clooney's list of desired players in the movie, with Clooney himself eyeing a minor role as well.
The film will be an independent production and there are plans to start shooting as early as February. It would be distributed through a distribution deal with Sony.
