George Lucas may follow in AVATAR’s footsteps and convert STAR WARS to 3D
He just can't leave it alone, can he? It being the STAR WARS saga and he being George Lucas of course. With all the attention AVATAR has gotten lately, it seems that it has caused George to reflect on what he and his team at ILM have been working at for "years and years and years."
Apparently, the director was so impressed with AVATAR's technology that he now believes it could give him the grappling gun he needs to swing across the gap. ”[I’m] happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3D,” he continued. “Haven’t been a big fan of 3D, but that movie definitely improves in (the field of) 3D.”
And I'm sure Golden Globe-winning film's box office returns - currently passed the $1.6 billion mark - didn't shy away ole' Georgey boy.
Check out what else Lucas had to say about the prospect of STAR WARS in 3D after the jump.
“We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take STAR WARS and put it in 3D,” said Lucas. “But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”
I wouldn't expect it anytime soon however, as I understand the process of converting an established movie to 3D is a tedious and difficult one. Lucas is also working on his first non-STAR WARS, non-INDIANA JONES related project since 1988's THE LAND BEFORE TIME which he produced (his last story & writing credit was on 94's RADIOLAND MURDERS). He is currently writing his Tuskegee Airmen film, RED TAILS, about the first African American combat pilots in WWII. Lucas will also produce the film.
All joking aside, how amazing would it be to see STAR WARS in 3D? The Death Star trench run in A NEW HOPE? The light saber duel between Luke and Vader in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK? Or how about the giant space battle in RETURN OF THE JEDI? Sadly, I don't even think 3D can help EPISODE I, II and III's two-dimensional acting.
