George Lucas says STAR WARS saga will come to Blu-ray in Fall 2011
The prequel trilogy and Special Editions of STAR WARS are truly some of the most frustrating films for movie geeks everywhere: never have their been so many brilliant sequences coupled with some of the most baffling, cringe-inducing moments that seem to be straight from the mind of a special needs child. Prepare for all those moments to clash together in crystal clear resolution when the entire saga hits Blu-ray next year! Yay.
The new packaging will include the Special Editions (bet you a thousand Republic credits) and the prequels, plus never-before-seen deleted scenes. George Lucas also said they are looking at doing an entirely new digital transfer of the theatrical releases of the first three films (ya know, the ones where Han shoots first), so plan on a re-release of the OT's (that's what the suckers...uhh...hardcore STAR WARS fans call them) in the coming decade.
Check out one of the deleted scenes from RETURN OF THE JEDI after the force-jump!
When I first saw this scene, my first reaction was fairly lukewarm, but it does frame RETURN OF THE JEDI in an completely new way. It shows the allure of the dark side for Luke, and how it might have been just as much of an internal struggle for him as it was for Anakin. And you get to see Luke building the green bladed lightsaber...coooool. The problem is that I don't want to see anything cool anymore when it comes to STAR WARS, because all it does is highlight the massive problems and poor toy-driven decisions that undermined the legacy of the force.
Be sure to head over to the LA Times blog to read producer Gary Kurtz's thoughts on where the franchise went wrong (ahem...RETURN OF THE JEDI) and what some of the original ideas where for the third film.
