Girls, girls, girls: HBO trailer for Judd Apatow produced estro-show has wings

Tiny Furniture Dunham

Though I enjoy Judd Apatow's films  as much as (although, speaking honestly, probably less than) the next person, I have always steadfastly maintained that  the best thing he was ever involved in was the painfully funny one-season-wonder FREAKS AND GEEKS (which I recall watching, spellbound, in its entirety over a single weekend when it first appeared on DVD).

In keeping with the estro-success of last year's Lady Comedy BRIDESMAIDS, executive producer/King Midas Apatow returns to the TV fray on April 15 with GIRLS, starring Lena Dunham (and what seems like the entire cast of her 2010 indie hit TINY FURNITURE).

Billed by HBO as "a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s," the pilot, written and directed by series creator Dunham, bears her inescapable stamp.

HBO has a pretty decent track record with Ladycentric comedies, as evidenced by the massive success of Sex and the City. Girls, (also set in New York City) despite appearing less glossy than SATC, seems poised to strike many of the same notes that struck a chord with that show's devoted core audience; a potent mix of awkward funny and funny-ha-ha.
