Good news! The sequel to G.I. JOE might actually have the makings to be good! That is, with Stephen Sommers out of the director’s chair for the sequel, as the L.A. Times’ 24 Frames is reporting that “two agents who represent other filmmakers have said they’d recently been approached about their clients coming on to helm the movie and were told that Sommers would not be getting behind the camera. Paramount declined to comment.”

Early reports stated that Sommers would in fact return for a sequel, along with the original cast who are locked in a contract, unlike their director. Now it looks like that may not be true. You may recall that, prior to G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA’s release, there were rumors abound that Sommers had been locked out of the editing room and fired in the post-production process. This was later denied by the studio.

With ZOMBIELAND scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick still on screenwriting duty and a capable director at the helm, I know that G.I. JOE 2 could actually live up to the potential its source material presents. And knowing is half the…crap, I forgot how the rest of that saying goes. Is it skirmish? Yeah, that’s it. Knowing is half the skirmish.

So, who would you like to see direct G.I. JOE: RED AND BLUE LASERS? (Side note: That’s not the real title. But it should be.)
