It’s awards season, and this Tuesday has brought the biggest piece of the puzzle yet.

This Tuesday has seen the release of the nominees for the 68th Annual Golden Globes, and I must say, it is quite an interesting collection of names and films.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK continues its streak of ever-growing awards buzz, racking up 6 nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Actor (Drama), Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, cementing it as the biggest awards darling of the year. David Fincher’s fantastic look at the creation of Facebook and the life of its founder Mark Zuckerberg is joined by awards season heavyweights THE KING’S SPEECH (who leads all films with seven nominations this year), THE FIGHTER and BLACK SWAN in the Best Picture (Drama) category, along with the addition of big time blockbuster INCEPTION. The comedy/musical side of the ball is quite interesting as well, featuring a list of nominees including THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, RED, THE TOURIST, BURLESQUE, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

As far as interesting nominations go, there aren’t many, particularly when you have to deal with the fact that you are splitting three major lists (Best Picture, Actor, and Actress), into two separate lists, making it hard to truly prognosticate what these truly mean for the awards game and where we will go from here. However, additions like Emma Stone for EASY A are interesting.  It’s a really fun film, so it’s nice to see it get a bit of love here. Also, this proves that the breaking up of the Drama and Musical/Comedy categories is laughable at best.

Biggest shock: TRUE GRIT getting snubbed. Not even a Best Actor nomination. Really interesting.

The Golden Globes will be held on January 16, 2011, hosted by Ricky Gervais.
