Gore Verbinski to direct THE LONE RANGER; Johnny Depp attached to star
In continuing with the confirmation-filled news day that this pre-pre-Thanksgiving day has become, Deadline has confirmed that one masked ranger is indeed set to jump to the big screen, with a long-rumored director confirmed to be leading the project.
The outlet is reporting that Gore Verbinski will indeed be helming Disney’s upcoming adaptation of THE LONE RANGER, with Justin Haythe penning the script, along with Johnny Depp, who is attached to play Tonto.
This shouldn’t be all that shocking to those who know Depp’s love of working with the same filmmaker over spans of time (both Verbinski and Tim Burton have been those filmmakers throughout Depp’s career), and with Disney behind it, we can expect quite a ton of news on this one to come quickly.
George Clooney has been rumored to take on the role of Lone Ranger, but it doesn’t look as though that has gone much of anywhere. Personally, I think that someone like Jon Hamm (pointed out ever so perfectly by The Playlist) would be absolutely perfect for this role, but then again, he’s perfect for anything in the eyes of this writer.
I think Verbinski is a rather perfect pick to direct this project, so at this point, I really couldn’t be more excited. Sure, I'd rather see Depp do something outside of the world of franchise films (something like DEAD MAN comes to mind), but if it has to be a franchise, why not one with Verbinski at the helm?
